MEDICAL TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

Medical Training Opportunities

Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) coordinates medical education for the City of Kawartha Lakes and Ross Memorial Hospital. If you are interested in an elective or rural teaching practice placement please contact us to discuss further.

Electives

Medical electives are offered to all levels of learners from first year medical students to second year Family Medicine Residents. Offered are electives in the following specialties: family medicine, emergency medicine, hospitalist medicine, general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, anesthesia, OBS/Gyn, and psychiatry. Electives are offered throughout the year and accommodations are available. KLHCI works in conjunction with our community preceptors, the Ross Memorial Hospital and Rural Ontario Medical Program (ROMP) to coordinate the training opportunities.

A recent trainee provided this statement following a family medicine placement: “My time in Kawartha Lakes and Fenelon Falls taught me a lot about providing medical services in a smaller rural community. I enjoyed that in working in this community I provided an essential service where the patients recognized me as a care provider and essential pillar of their community. While I originally was afraid that small communities would not see a wide breadth of concerns because they do not attract sub-specialists that are experts in very narrow fields, I discovered that you actually see a wide range of patients because you are the first contact for these patients. Additionally, you get to follow-up with these patients as their regular provider, which is rewarding to see them recover. I felt so welcomed into the community and that made it a wonderful learning experience, since I became invested in the follow-up care of my patients.” Meagan W, Queen’s University
